Ramadan Mubarak (Happy Ramadan)!

Today marks the beginning of Ramadan, and the Jersey City Free Public Library is honored to join our community in recognizing this sacred month of fasting, reflection, and spiritual growth observed by Muslims worldwide. Ramadan is a time for personal introspection and an opportunity to foster understanding and connection within our diverse community.
Did you know a quarter of the world celebrates Ramadan? Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is one of the holiest months in Islam. It is when Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, abstaining from food, drink, and other physical needs as an act of worship and self-discipline. Fasting is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, symbolizing spiritual growth, gratitude, and empathy for those less fortunate. The month concludes with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, a joyous festival marking the end of fasting and a time for community gatherings, feasting, and giving.
