JCFPL Responds to Executive Order Eliminating the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Defunding Libraries

Access to knowledge, the foundation of our democracy, is under threat. A recent executive order aims to dismantle the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the cornerstone of federal support for libraries and museums across America.
For decades, IMLS has been the lifeline ensuring libraries across the United States – from bustling public spaces to quiet academic halls, from vibrant school libraries to specialized institutions – have the resources to effectively serve their communities. The IMLS support isn’t just about books; it’s about building stronger, more informed communities through:
- Early literacy programs that lay the foundation for a child’s future success
- Inclusive and diverse programming that celebrates cultural experiences and community growth
- High-speed internet access that bridges the digital divide in underserved areas
- Job training and small business resources that fuels local economic development
The repercussions of scrapping IMLS will reverberate across the nation, with rural and economically challenged areas bearing the brunt. Without federal funding, many libraries will struggle to keep their doors open. The loss of library services will increase the gap in access to reliable information, reduce access to life changing educational and cultural opportunities, and exacerbate social dislocation.
This attack on IMLS calls into question whether libraries can depend on other federal funding, such as the Federal E-Rate program, administered by the Federal Communications Commission. That program provided JCFPL with $100,116 in 2024 to cover internet costs, technological infrastructure, and digital resources our community relies on every day. The loss of federal funds doesn’t just jeopardize library services; it threatens to limit the educational and economic prospects of countless individuals right here in Jersey City.
