Happy Juneteenth from JCFPL!
On June 19th Juneteenth (short for June Nineteenth) commemorates the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control over the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops arrived over two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States. Juneteenth continues to be celebrated in cities with Black populations through a series of parades, family reunions, speeches, and consuming of specific foods with a red color including barbeque.
This year Jersey City Free Public Library’s Community Awareness Series will be hosting a Juneteenth Family Festival on Saturday June 22nd 1 p.m. – 7p.m. at Berry Lane Park. Please join us for a day full of incredible live performances and activities for all ages!
