Explore JCFPL for Dewey Decimal System Day
Celebrate Dewey Decimal System Day by exploring your local Jersey City Free Public Library branch! The Dewey Decimal System is a library classification system that provides a structure for labeling items so that they will sit with items of the same or similar topics on the shelf, making them easier to find. Dewey Decimal System Day is celebrated every December 10 to honor the system’s creator, Melvil Dewey, on his birthday. Melvil Dewey created the Dewey Decimal System in 1873 while working at the Amherst College library. For example, did you know books about History, Geography, and Biography can be found in the 900 sections? Additionally, books about Arts and Recreation can be found in the 700 sections!
If you want to learn more about using the Dewey Decimal System at one of our 11 branches, politely ask staff for guidance! Whether you’re a Dewey Decimal System novice or a pro, Jersey City Free Public Library is a Welcoming Space for all.
