Celebrate Black History Month!!!

Coming to 3 Library Branches:

reg e gaines

Jersey City-Native & Tony Award-Winning Author of

“Bring in da Noise/Bring in da Funk”

JERSEY CITY, N.J.   January 23, 2014 – Quick! You have three tries to get it right!

On February 14, 19 & 22, the Jersey City Free Public Library will shine from the light from its native son, reg e gaines, who will perform at the Lafayette, Miller and Greenville branches, respectively, in celebration of Black History Month.

Reg e gaines, best known for his Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, Bring in da Noise/Bring in da Funk, has been performing in various programs his entire career, including poetry/ theater performances and workshops, guest speaking events, and public readings. Gaines is well qualified in the spoken word and stage arts. His peers have awarded him with accolades reserved for the finest of performers and writers. His list of achievements includes being a two-time Tony Award/ Grammy Award nominee, yet reg e gaines’ most laudable achievement is that he is in his absolute element when working with people. He has designed and facilitated programs, commanded the stage with an electric presence, and engaged both staff and patrons alike with an improvisational ability that had people asking about him for months afterward. Reg e gaines is a truly dynamic performer capable of taking the reins and driving the show. He speaks with authority about the arts in a non-performing context, with a commitment to the arts, service, and the cultivation of creativity. Gaines is a strong supporter of public libraries (in his hometown, Jersey City, and his current hometown, San Diego) and is utterly enthusiastic about working with the community in an effort to bring the arts into focus, especially in regards to young people.

History Hunters: Aceti Family of Jersey City Donates 5 Archival Ledgers from 19th Century

Trick or treat! No, this isn’t a library Halloween trick… It’s a treat, especially for history buffs.

The New Jersey Room of the Jersey City Free Public Library received a special donation on Tuesday, October 22nd when five archival ledgers from the 19th century were donated by the Aceti family’s five siblings – Peter Jr., Harry, Robert, Jerome and Michael – who were all born and raised in Jersey City.

BACKGROUND: Jerome Aceti (grandfather of the five brothers) gave the five ledgers to his son, Peter Aceti Sr., at age 15 (65 years ago, in 1948, after World War II). Peter had no idea from where the books had come; only that his father was in construction, as a mason. Historically, books and other paper items were stored in walls as a rudimentary form of insulation prior to modern-day fiber glass insulation. The influx of soldiers coming home from the war produced many home-buyers, using the G.I. Bill for purchase. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that a mason working on these homes would find history in the walls as insulation.

JERSEY CITY, N.J.   October 11, 2013 – Who wouldn’t like an additional $1,500 to spend?

The Jersey City Free Public Library found itself in that position when fielding a request by the

New Jersey State Library to apply for the settlement funds from the Bristol-Myers-Squibb anti-trust lawsuit.

According to Deputy State Librarian Kathleen Moeller-Peiffer of the New Jersey State Library, “These funds became available based upon a settlement reached by numerous State Attorneys General against Bristol-Myers-Squibb.
