Celebrating the 125th Anniversary of the Statue of Liberty
Ushering in a brand new cultural collaboration between the Jersey City Free Public Library and New Jersey City University (NJCU), a special art exhibit had hung in the picture windows surrounding the Five Corners Branch.
The Five Corners Branch Library, in conjunction with NJCU art students, presented an art exhibit of Posters and Logos from contest entries for the celebration of the 125th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty, which was held in 2011 and sponsored by the National Park Service (NPS). Both competitions were open to NJCU students and alumni, having the anniversary theme: “Honor History – Envision the Future.”
The Opening Reception of the NJCU Art Students Posters & Logos Exhibit Celebrating the 125th Anniversary of the Statue of Liberty was held on Monday, May 6, in the lobby, outside the Mildred H. Hunke Auditorium of the Five Corners Branch Library, 678 Newark Avenue, Jersey City. The art exhibit ran from Monday, May 6 to Wednesday, July 31, encompassing two national holidays – Memorial Day and Independence Day, with special celebratory significance since the Statue of Liberty opens again to the public on the Fourth of July. Lady Liberty was closed for repairs due to damage from Hurricane Sandy.
Two students, Joseph Domalewski and Felipé Barros, both NJCU art major seniors at the time, won – Joseph, for his logo, and Felipé, for his poster design.
The 125th anniversary celebration launch occurred on the Statue of Liberty’s actual 125th birthday – October 28, 2011 – and lasted for one year. The logo and poster designs appeared on all commemorative and promotional materials produced, including pins and patches, banners, posters, printed publicity materials, and the National Park Service’s web and social media sites for the commemorative year.
The logo by Joseph Domalewski was selected by the public through an online competition by the NPS. The poster by Felipé Barros was selected by a juried competition, and was reproduced, exhibited and sold during the Statue of Liberty’s 125th anniversary year. The poster was also reproduced on tote bags, t-shirts and mugs. All of the juried poster submissions were displayed in the Ellis Island Immigration Museum during the month of October 2011, with traveling exhibits after.
“We are excited working with the University on this initial project,” said Library Director Priscilla Gardner. “There are many ways we are planning to collaborate, including guest lecturers and student volunteers for the Miller Branch Teen Center and Literacy, respectively, so I know this is developing into a fruitful union.”
“I just knew we both had so much to offer each other,” said Dean Barbara Feldman, Ph.D. of the William J. Maxwell College of Arts & Sciences at New Jersey City University. “University faculty and students are ready to participate in cultural exchanges of art, music and other performing arts, with the Jersey City library as a perfect venue. We are just as excited!”
The over 120-year-old Jersey City Free Public Library serves New Jersey’s second largest city, consisting of a Main Library, nine branches, and a wheelchair-accessible mobile branch, the Bookmobile, that was custom-designed and -built, and on the road since May 2008. The Jersey City library system provides access to a diversified collection of 400,000+ pieces of printed, audiovisual, and electronic resources that addresses the needs of the truly multicultural clientele of 247,597 residents (U.S. Census 2010). The Library offers patrons automated catalog and circulation services, for searching at home or from library Public Access computers. The Main Library is the repository of two special collections: New Jersey Room, a collection of about 20,000 volumes with an emphasis on Jersey City, and the Biblioteca Criolla, a collection of 18,000 volumes (11,000 adults / 7,000 children) in Spanish from different Latino cultures. Both departments hold special programs in deference to their respective collections. On August 17, 2004, the Library held the grand opening of its first new branch in 42 years, serving the M.L. King redevelopment area, the Glenn D. Cunningham Branch Library & Community Center, named after the late Jersey City Mayor and State Senator.
LADY LIBERTY ENLIGHTENS THE WORLD – In celebration of the logos and posters created by art students from New Jersey City University that hang from the picture windows of the Five Corners Branch Library from May 6 to July 31, 2013, Five Corners presented an Opening Reception on May 6 that included home-baked cookies (chocolate chip and lemon sugar, in the shape of the Statue of Liberty, baked by Public Information Officer Michele Dupey).
AN EXPLANATION – New Jersey City University is especially proud of their art students, for their talent is expressed in their works and in two students having won – Joseph Domalewski and Felipé Barros, both NJCU art major seniors in 2011 – Joseph, for his logo, and Felipé, for his poster design.
OPENING RECEPTION – The public gathered alongside representatives from New Jersey City University (NJCU) and the Jersey City library, including Ella Rue, assistant to Dr. Barbara Feldman, dean of the William J. Maxwell College of Arts & Sciences, who is pictured with one of the artists, Roanne Bacchus. In the next photo, community activist and art-lover Charlene Burke talked with Dr. Allan DeFina, dean of Education at NJCU. Followed by, Five Corners staff member Eddie Perez and Patricia Vega, manager of Biblioteca Criolla, a department devoted to books in Spanish and Latino culture on the 4th floor of the Main Library.
Main Library Closed
*The Main Library will be closed starting Monday, September 28, 2015 due to renovations and reopen on Monday, January 4, 2016.
The Heights Branch will be closed starting Thursday, November 19, 2015 and will reopen on Monday, December 14, 2015 due to reconstruction.
