Celebrating Dia de los Muertos at Biblioteca Criolla

Celebrating Día de los Muertos at Biblioteca Criolla by Encouraging Peaceful Actions

Biblioteca Criolla, the Spanish language department at the Main Library, was honored to join in the first annual city-wide celebration of “Día de los Muertos Jersey City,” which is invested in cultural arts, community wellness, creative healing and the promotion of peace – in response to the recent upsurge in violence in the area. This programming was held from Friday, November 1 through Thursday, November 7, with Criolla’s program being held on the last day.

Día de los Muertos, or “Day of the Dead,” is a Latin-American tradition that began in Mexico. It celebrates life and death, viewing it as a transition to a higher level of consciousness, while honoring those who have passed. Día de los Muertos is celebrated on November 1, in direct correlation with the Christian celebrations of “All Saints Day,” and on November 2, “All Souls Day.”

Creating bridges across Jersey City neighborhoods, the five participating cultural-artistic centers in this city-wide event include Creative Grove Artist & Designer Market, Ummi Village Community Garden, Simply Feel Better Self-Health Space and of course, Biblioteca Criolla of the Jersey City Free Public Library.

Beatriz Urrutia read two children’s books that promoted peace and non-violence to the children during the regularly scheduled story time hour. The children enjoyed the story and sang along to their favorite children’s songs.
